Tomato Variety Help
« on: July 16, 2020, 22:20 »
Hi All.

A fellow gardener at my allotment gave me some tomato plants earlier in the year and told me they were sungold, but they Definately arent sungold.

Any ideas?

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I have some similar plants but they plants are different and the fruit slightly so, maybe see what colour they end up - mine are I believe some form of yellow pear tomato plant.

I'd agree that they're probably one of the 'Pears' - 3 types that I know of: red, yellow and chocolate.

I've got just one similar plant, Mark, and it's a 'San Marzano'.

I sowed a whole packet, and some are outside in a soil/compost, as this one is. It's not doing very well, being about 4' tall, with just one main truss, just like yours, and another just forming...

The others are all pretty well normal, so we may have a 'rogue' on our hands, or maybe a superb plant in the end - who knows!

Later on...

Just looked around and in fact we have two like that! Both seem healthy enough, if shorter...

I am going along with Growster and saying San Marzano . Some of them look a bit Roma'ish but Roma tends not to get greenback.  Roma has San Marzano in its lineage so you do sometimes get the odd more Roma shaped San Marzano. I have both growing side by side and have posted photos you can clearly see the green back on the SM.

They appear to be turning red, so the plot thickens...

I don’t think they are Roma or San Marzano as they aren’t long enough...

I think we need some more pics now they're ripening, so fully grown  :)
They didn't look pear-shaped to me in the first pic, but maybe they've altered now....

I do love a mystery

They definitely could be Roma they are the correct shape although I don't know about size however some Roma tomatoes can be small. What is interesting is that the tomatoes are not all the same shape... and some have the little pointed ends something I have seen when growing SM 2 . Thing is if the taste nice save some of the seeds for next year

Based on your initial pictures I would have said Ildi like Jezza as I’ve got some Ildis over the allotment and they look exactly the same, but they’re yellow not red.

One things for sure they’re definitely not San Marzano.

Based on your most recent pictures, I’d say that’s a red pear.
