Potato scab
« on: June 12, 2020, 01:03 »
Hello all

I've had to harvest all my first earlies today as they had started to develop scab. The leaves had also started to turn yellow with brown spots.

I've got second earlies next to where the firsts were, and main crop next to them.

Will they be alright or should I expect a poor harvest from the remaining plants? They are planted in what was lawn last year so not sure if that's an issue?
 Cheers
Jack

Wireworms are the most common problem associated with soil previously grassed over.

Scab is usually associated with excessive lime in the soil - is your soil naturally chalky (or did you lime it yourself?)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Bad luck:(
RHS says
Quote
To control common scab, do not allow the soil to become dry during tuber development. Water the developing crop if necessary, starting two to three weeks after plants emerge and continuing for about four weeks, applying 20 litres per sq m (4 gallons per sq yd)
So watering the later varieties may help.
It then mentions lime as Jay has posted. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=230
Then says
Quote
Choose resistant cultivars. ‘Accent’, ‘Arran Pilot’, ‘Juliette’, ‘Golden Wonder’, ‘King Edward’, ‘Pentland Crown’ and ‘Pentland Javelin’ show some resistance to common scab. ‘Desiree’, ‘Hermes’, ‘King Edward’, ‘Pixie’ and ‘Sante’ show some resistance to powdery scab

You can also look up different potato varieties here, for their individual resistances Variety Database - Home
