Tomato advice please?
« on: May 27, 2020, 21:17 »
Hi sorry second post in a minute. I am trying to read gardening books and looking for advice on here but sometimes I have issues I’ve not come across on here or in a book.

I can laces the tomato into a grow bag a while ago, is it time to plant it into my raised bed or carry on as is??
And I’ve since read up how your suppose to thin the plants to keep the main stem strong. Has the main stem split into two (pic 2) is this ok? And how much leaves should I thin out or is it too late?

Based on your photos I would leave the plant in the growbag.
The main stem looks like it has split but I think it is too large to remove personally.
Have a look at the tomato growing section in the advice section here it will give you lots of details to help you.

Keep digging

Just give the 2nd stem it's own cane, and think of it like 2 tomato plants for the price of one  :D
The plant will need careful watering, though, as it will be carrying twice as much foliage as normal.
When it comes to thinning leaves, you only start after you have green tomatoes showing on their truss. Then you remove any leaves or branches from the stem below the ripening tomatoes.
Good luck!

Plants look nice just make sure they are well supported with canes, it is easy to forget how heavy tomatoes are, and you will be in for a nice crop of toms.

Noticed today the tomato leaves are looking a bit ill. They’ve had a clear bag over them, Like a propagator?? 🤷

Took them off this morning, thinking that they could with some sun (🤷‍♂️) and saw half the plants had leaves like the pictures:

Why could this be?? They’ve been watered well I think?

I think the bag is likely to be the cause of the problem - too hot.  They don't really need it once they are that size.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Glad you said that. I took it off after posting, more to give them some air but yeah makes sense what you say. Thanks.
