In a passing moment, I thought about using 5l plastic water bottles with the bottom cut off, to place over the top of young plants before they get ravaged by snails etc. Has anyone given it a go. I can latch on to a plentiful supply of them, so?>

They make good cloches

I use them as cloches, mostly with success (although no guarantees the beasties can't get under or over). Just watch in hot weather as sometimes the plants get scorched.

Thanks to Silva for the reply, I sort of knew someone had to be doing it, interesting that in hot weather they can become scorched, i'll watch for that. Maybe i'll try to get them a few millimetres in the ground so the crawlies can't get under.

As a keen wild bird feeder (feeder of wild birds)  I have 'quite a few' plastic boxes from Wilko's containing various suet treats.  Absolutely stunning cloches.

I read the other day that Bob Flowerdew cuts the top off his, so they are more like a tube, to help prevent overheating.

Interesting reply about cutting the tops off. I would think that they should be left that way for the plants to grow up and out of. More info would be good though.
