I have some fairly well matured compost which I have created form a years worth of kitchen peelings, cardboard and allotment green waste. In advance of planting my courgettes out I want to add it to the plot. Can I just lay it on the top of the soil and plant the courgettes directly into it, or should I dig it in? Thanks for any advice.

I would say dig it in but make sure of the acidity level by testing, before planting anything in it.

Dugless you’re not living up to your name  :D. Not sure how I’m going to test the pH though? I don’t have any litmus paper.

Yes just put it in situ & plant into it. I always sink a 2 litre bottle with the bottom cut off for watering

Snows is just right - she is the Courgette Queen!

Once courgettes have got to their secondary leaves, you heave a sigh of relief, pop them in, then stand back as they grow like mad...

Mrs Growster has forbidden me to grow any this year as she's gone off them for some reason, so I've just planted three and won't tell her - yet...

I wonder what courgette wine is like? I made marrow rum last year and it was excellent stuff!

Good question!

It'd maybe turn out to be a sweetish white, my book says a marrow wine needs a grape-juice addition, but I don't see why it couldn't be quite good!

Let us know by - say - October 2022, and we can then discuss the issue over a glass..;0)

Thanks guys I look forward to getting them out. I might be in a minority but I love them. Courgette fritters are great and I also just serve them as a side veg, chopped, fried in olive oil garlic and herbs. Everyone here loves them. I need slug protection though as I put some out last week along with some toms ( too early) and the b.... molluscs just destroyed them.

I like making a mains from a small open dish of sliced courgettes, some garlicky oil, a tiny bit of onion flaked around, some Parmesan sliced and soldiered around the edges, and the whole lot covered with breadcrumbs and a few herbs and red peppers for colour... Bake until crispy on top...

Mrs Growster invented this and has now decided that she doesn't want to make it again, so I do it...

My sigh of relief comes once they are growing like mad having evaded the slugs! Any wet weather post planting puts me on edge!

I've had to bring mine in tonight owing to the cold, but so far - fingers crossed...

It won't be a problem for too much rain at the moment, I've forgotten what it looks like!
