First time growing cuckes and melons. How high??
« on: April 18, 2019, 15:42 »
My returning mojo has made me slightly more adventurous so I decided to try growing a cucumber and a melon. Should have gone to Specsavers! Reading about their cultivation I have to pinch out their growing shoots when they reach the g-house roof. WHAAAAT?? As I'm using a gro-bag for both and inserting gro-pots that have 4 cane inserts on the side of each pot, I'll stand the bag on a large tray and place it next to my g-house staging so I can secure the canes to it with rubber ties. Gonna need a bigger ladder!!!!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I just let my cucumbers go until they reach the greenhouse roof, and then I fix either horizontal canes along the greenhouse ridges, or supports made of old tights joined together and stretched an tied along the apex of the roof.  When said plant has romped its way from the back of the greenhouse and is heading out of the door at the front I nip out the growing tip of the leader.  Other than that I let them do what they please and I always get a fantastic crop.  The only tip I can give that might save your plants is to plant them slightly proud of the compost when you put them in, and always water from the bottom.  They have a nasty habit of waving "bye bye" very rapidly if they get wet around the stem, as they are prone to stem rot.

My method with cukes is to create a 6' cube out of strong garden canes and then dangle twine from that and peg the twine into the ground with a tent peg.  Then it's just wrap the plant round the twine as it grows.  Works fine and can support the ginormous cukes we get when swamped with crop and we just can't eat any more....

So not only do they reach the roof, they also travel along towards the front door - ooh, er!  ???   If I plant my melon in the same gro-bag and it does the same there'll be no room for me, never mind my sweetcorn and other plants and I don't even have a Plan B!

My plan B is to always have a machete on standby, just in case I need to clear my way out of the jungle.

I once mixed a cue up with a B/N squash it was grow nicely before I went on holiday (neighbour was watering)
but I had a job to get in the door when I returned as it was fighting to get out !
Good advise about not getting stem wet, I did come across someone advising planting a leggy one up to the first leaves on another less informed site which filled me with horror !!  I protested and left
Tell me and I,ll forget,Show me and I might
