Transplanting Cabbages
« on: April 02, 2019, 18:57 »
Hi,

I have some cabbages that I started from seed.

Given my location in the south of England, would you say these are big enough to transplant into the ground?

Thanks.

They look ok, Have they been hardened off?
If it were me I'd wait until next week after this cold snap has ended...

They've gone from the Conservatory (double-glazed) to greenhouse  (thin glass).

Should they just be put outside during the day for a short while?

Certainly big enough. Cabbages are hardy brassicas. Plant them deeply, right up to 'shoulder'. They need to be anchored in the ground as they hate wind-rock. Harden of in the daytime, but bring in at night.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

my seedlings were leggy as well.  I just replanted them and buried a fair amount of the stem.  Seemed to work ok, not sure if this approach is always right though, my seedlings were quite small when i did this.

Cabbages don't mind being buried deeply and it means they grow upright too, not with a stem at an angle, when they are then prone to fall over once a heavy head develops

I've planted out cabbage (Greyhound and Primo) Calabrese, cauliflower and kale, jut a few plants under fleece for a couple of weeks. Had a peek yesterday and the Primo seem to have disappeared - flaming slugs again! The rest seem to be doing OK though.
