Recommended pot size for plum toms.
« on: March 26, 2019, 15:03 »
I've just sown some San Marzano plum toms and as I want to maximise the space in my greenhouse they're going to go in pots. What size pot would you recommend when they're finally planted and are they a bush type or do you nip the axil leaves off as they come?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

They are cordon types, so need nipping out, they grow quite tall as well, so arrange wires/canes up into the ridge, it will fruit all the way up to the top - well it does here.
It's a beggar for getting BER though, so make sure it gets regular watering and stand the pots in trays to hold water as well. I grow them in the soil for best results or in these 14.5L buckets from Wilko, £1 each

I grow a minimum of 15 san Marzano tomato plants every year... but outdoors. They are a fantastic tomato in my opinion great for conserving and passata. I have never ever lost a single tomato to blossom end rot in 5 years of growing them. Blossom end rot is not a disease it is a calcium problem read about it here Prevent Blossom-End Rot: Tomato Diseases and Problems | Gardeners.com

I have been growing San Marzano for years.
I use my saved seed each year.
Always grow them outside in pots.
I use 10 inch pots and fill them with about six inch of compost (so soil level about 3 inch from top) in the pot. I grow one plant within each pot. All pots sit side by side in a row.
I put in four poles that sit three feet above the soil level. Wrap string round all the poles every 4 inches or so.
Do pinch out.
Always get a great crop. Use them for my tomato paste and soup bases that I freeze and use throughout the year.
Will be sowing the first lot of seed in my greenhouse in small 2 inch pots later this week. One seed per pot, they germinate quickly about 7 days, ready to be planted into their final outside pots in early May and cropping from late May.
I water them a few times a week, in their outside position. Do have some that sit on soil and some that sit in trays.
Also feed them every fortnight with levington or similar tomato feed.
Living down here, they love our Sunny warm climate and last year with that long hot spell had double the normal crop.
They do stop producing in late September and for me have had no problems at all.

Jambop, I agree it's not a disease, but if you search the forum, most people have BER problems with plum tomatoes, S.Marzano in particular.
I would assume that, given your location, your soil and weather are better suited for growing them, plus growing in soil supplies a steady level of moisture and nutrients at the roots. This seems to be most important for preventing BER. Most potting composts/greenhouse soils are low in Calcium and so John advises an occasional spray/or feed with calcium nitrate.

Thanks for the useful info. I'm also trying to maximise space in my outdoor raised beds so I'll try some inside and some outside and use the biggest pots I have.

You can always place a second pot with the bottom cut out (like ring culture pots) on top of the first if you want to give more depth for the roots....

In the polytunnel I grow red alert baby plum toms in the buckets the co-op uses for flowers.  There's always a ready supply of them dumped outside the shop.  Quick drill some holes for drainage and away you go...
