Growing a peachtree in Aberdeen?!
« on: March 22, 2019, 20:08 »
Hello,
I am a newby in this forum, but hopefully one of you experienced gardeners can answer my question. I moved a few years ago from Germany to Aberdeen, into a house with a garden. My neighbours in Germany wanted to give me a good start here in Scotland and gave me peachtree sapling, coming from a tree which grew well in northern Germany. I was a bit sceptical, but to my surprise the tree rooted here in Scotland and at the second year it actually flowered and had (admittedly very small and hard) peaches on it. However, since that year, it never flowered again, and no more fruit appeared (I am waiting now for about 5 years... :(). The growth of the tree seems fine, though, and I prune it every year.
The location where I planted it is a south-facing, mild slope, the sunniest part of my garden, but very exposed to wind and elements.  The soil is slightly acidic and can get dry.
Unfortunately I don't know the variety of the tree, but the adult one in Germany is fairly small.
My question is: does anybody have an idea why it does not flower any more? I've got two theories: (1) it is not cold enough in winter (as we are at the coast). However, last year we had a good period of frost and it still did not flower. This year we had hardly any frost, but still no flowers. and (2) the place where it is is too exposed.
It would be great to get some opinion. Should I (realistically) give up on it?
Thank you very much for taking the time!

Hi Kkober and welcome  :)

I am at the other end of the UK and you can grow peaches here.  We get warmer winters than where you are, but also longer and warmer summers.

Peaches need a sunny sheltered spot, so perhaps moving it may help.  You probably need to wait for someone more local to you to reply to know whether your tree is a lost cause or not.

Hello,
thanks for the friendly welcome!  Yeah, maybe I should consider moving it (but the option would only be something less sunny and only slightly more sheltered). Hmmm...Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, I'll give this some thought.  :)

I get beautiful Rochester peaches here in the High Peak in Derbyshire.

The tree is in a polytunnel!

Otherwise I wouldn't have even tried.
