Marriage allowance tax refund.
« on: September 08, 2018, 12:45 »
I've just received a nice little cheque from HM because I read that if someone earns less than their personal allowance, their other half can get their tax reduced and it's also back-dated for previous years. Worth doing!
https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We did this a couple of years ago after I read about it in an article Martin Lewis writes called "Money saving Expert", a least I think that's his name.
It only took a couple of minutes to do and was time very well spent.  The application is so simple to fill out, even I could do it!

You can also do it over the phone so no paperwork required.

It was very simple so even I could do it too! One question OH asked me is regarding his P60. He gave me the details which I entered, but he forgot he had two others; however these were mentioned in the letter he got from them. Should he give them this extra info or do they already know about it? I've got a cheque for 2017-2018 so will there be another one for the past eligible years?

You can claim for past years only as far back as 2015-16. I think you may have to specifically say that you wish to claim for a particular year. I've no experience as we are only entitled from the current tax year although I think I was asked if I wanted to backdate the claim. One thing possibly worth mentioning is that it's the partner giving up some of their allowance who has to apply.

Not marriage related but also possibly useful for someone is if you wear a uniform at work (that includes something as simple as a polo shirt with the company logo on) and are responsible for cleaning/washing it then you can claim a tax rebate for that (which can be backdated for, I think, 4 years). The size of allowance isnt massive and depends on what you're responsible for - I got £60 added to my tax free allowance for polo shirts and a fleece - but worth claiming.

When filling out the on-line form I did claim for the previous years. As OH isn't computer-savvy I did it for him.

Again not marriage related, but I have just applied for a refund and been told I'm due £500 as I've overpaid income tax from April last year until when I retired in January this year.  Bring it on!!  On-line application took the two of us to sort it out as I didn't have a P60.   I've always applied for the uniform allowance which is about £24  a year.
