Peas/beans choice
« on: April 29, 2018, 17:42 »
Hi all,

The grandson (10) is showing some interest in growing some things on our plot so we have given over one of our beds.
We’ve asked what he’d like to grow and he couldn’t make his mind up so next question was what’s do you like to eat ?
Tuna pasta !!
Obviously that’s gonna be difficult so we have decided on some things for him, I wanted some advice on pea/beans, I would like something he can munch on straight from the plant but also something tall growing, what do you guys n gals recommend ??
Cheers
John

Alderman Peas then. Tall, instant eating, (when ripe)

its nice to see the younger generation showing an interest wanting  to grow something yes peas an excellent choice

out of six grandchildren only one of ours is  showing an interest in growing something so we dicided to keep my daugters alotment going as  she had dicided to give it up this year with three kids and full time working there was just not enough time for the allotments

so as we had been doing the allotment last year and told from my Daughter that Danny wanted to have a go so its going to be potatoes and onions for a starter see how Danny gets on

i had the three of them helping me up the allotment last year just one day and they  nearly sent me barmy i think they could hear me shouting ten mile away  >:(that's not going to happen again  :D :D

Alderman Peas then.

That's what I would suggest plus Cosse Violette purple podded climbing bean, magically turn from purple to green as they cook, if you can get him to watch  :D You shouldn't eat them raw though, raw beans can make some people sick  :(
How about sweetcorn, if he likes it - you can eat that raw :)

Cheers for the advice guys n gals.
Alderman peas it is then and I'll look in to purple beans.
Mum, sweet corn we had already decided on, we have 3 varieties growing happily away in the greenhouse so he can have some of those when the weather warms up a bit.
He is also going to get strawberries in a hanging basket, 1 potatoe plant in a bucket and a squash grown vertically. Just have to figure a way to get all that in a 7'x5' raised bed 🙃

What would he think of radishes too?  Quick growing, a hit of flavour and once they've been washed off he can eat them at the plot?

I'm trying to get my nephew interested in gardening and nature but it's hard going.  He's 4 and is scared of everything - even his own shadow, so I'm trying to show him that nature and flying things are not to be feared.  It's early days but he's showing some signs of wanting to learn more.

Trouble is, his mam (my sister) now wants me to bring his overactive 2 year old brother, and they are just naughty when they are together, so I'm no so keen on that!

Good call SnooziSuzi, i'd never considered radishes.
Regarding your sisters cherubs, doesn't your site have a rule of only 1 child at a time ?   ;)
You'd love to have all the kiddies come over together but couldn't possibly break site rules for fear of being evicted...

I hadn't thought of that!  I'm the Chair, I'm sure I can crowbar that into the rules somewhere!

She’s your sister, just tell her no, she knows what they’re like. I take our granddaughter who’s 2 but I wouldn’t try to do any gardening if I was on my own with her, unless she was gardening & I was supervising, just too dangerous for the time being, they’re like whirling dervishes at that age😂
A woman's place is in her garden.

How about some sugar snap peas? They can be harvested and eaten raw, in stir-fries or just as a side veg. Any that escape being picked can be podded as little peas. They taste beautiful.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
