Chicken Manure ?
« on: June 28, 2017, 13:56 »
I have found a source of chicken manure, (not a lot, only 4 hens, :D), now it is obviously fresh(ish), the question is "Do I leave it to "mature" a la Horse manure or can I use it straight away, in some form or other, (let it dry out and spread as dust, for example). Other than drowning it in a barrel, a la Comfrey, which, to be honest, is what I'm thinking of doing, as there wont be a lot of it at any given time.

It's a bit strong when fresh, so I'd add it to your compost heap, just add more as you get it. Leave it until it's time to dig/fork it in over winter.

Exactly what I do with my hens poo!  Helps to rot things down, so super compost, super quick!

I put my hens' poos, along with their bedding, into those builders rubble sacks. when it neared the top I grew in it. Garlic did well as did courgettes. It lasted three seasons and then I tipped out into my raised beds 🙂

I don't know they're my daughter's hens and yes, I do get eggs when they are laying well, plus all they lay when I hen-sit at holiday time  :D
