Has the worm turned ???
« on: January 27, 2008, 16:29 »
A few days ago, I was digging a hole, came across a worm, so I thought 'That'll make a tasty treat for the chooks' and promptly threw it into the run.
The 6 of them ran over excitedly, stared at it and then walked past it, looking at me as if to say 'What's the fuss all about ?'.

Today I moved a plastic bag to find about a dozen worms of all sizes.
I gathered up several of them and, again, threw them in, expecting a frenzied melee but, again, they ran over, inspected them and ran to the fence.

Have we got vegetarian chickens or are the worms threatening them in some way ?

Will it be slugs with attitude next ?

Maybe they're buddhists.  :?

They may get more acquainted with worms as they get older PG!!  Our other young uns aren't keen, but neither were the older POL's when we first got them, now however, they go mad for a worm!!!!

Perhaps worm is an acquired taste?????

Bit like kids when you try to feed them mushrooms or liver !!

I'll save the worms for the garden until their pallets are more refined.

I remember when I got my chucks last year "oh good I thought war on slugs n snails".  Ha :!:   I threw them slugs n snails only to have them turn their noses up at them (ok beaks).

I too thought I had Bhuddist chucks particularly when I caught them in a line genuflecting to my budhas' bust in the garden.

However 6 months later and they'll eat almost anything and love nothing better than a big fat juicy earthworm.

My experience with my chooks is just the same.  Looked quizzically at a tiny slug when the were young.  Gerty ended up swallowing frogs... whole

We hand reared a baby black bird years ago. He looked oven ready when we found him and we fed him dog food. We thought as he got older we should feed him worms, so we went digging for them in our borders. It was very embarrassing when our nieghbour looked over the fence as we were exclaiming what  fantastic juicy treats we had found!  :D That nieghbour gave us a wide berth after that!
