Shared fruit garden
« on: October 26, 2016, 19:56 »
Our allotment association has been given the use of a plot that nobody has been able to cultivate successfully, due in the main to too much water, there are a couple of springs that pop up when rain is very heavy.  Underlying soil is clay.   There is a north facing wall along one edge of the plot.

We have decided to put 2 beehives on the plot and grow fruit for members' use.  There are already some blackcurrant bushes at one end and an apple tree that seems to be doing OK.   We have been promised some redcurrants and a jostaberry.

What other fruit would be good here in Yorkshire?   We fancy a plum, cherry, pear, eating apples (there is an enormous cooker elsewhere on site).  What would be good up against the wall - a vine?

All thoughts, especially on variety gratefully received.

Yorkshire without Rhubarb is like Curry without rice !
Gooseberries love the North and a damson Merryweather would thrive.
Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be suspected of knowing nothing than opening it and proving it.

I don't think we are planning on rhubarb as everyone has at least one large clump on their own plot, also lots if gooseberries about.  Thinking more of trees on dwarf root stock.  Damson a very good idea.

I should add that to avoid overshadowing the adjacent plots, we need to plant trees on dwarf rooting stock.
