Patio Fruit Tree Problem
« on: October 26, 2016, 09:19 »
morning all :)
5 weeks ago I hade my left hip replaced, so hav'nt been out in the garden
to do any tidying up but the wife did get our small veg plot dug over before
I went in to hospital & as I've got to have the other hip done soon we're not
growing anything overwinter. Anyway I went out there yesterday knowing
the 2 patio apple trees had plenty of fruit on them so I picked them but
noticed that the 1 nearest to the green house has grown so much that when
you slide the door back it pulls some of the branches with it.
Now the question:- When is the right time to prune them ? we have got them
tied to a fan shaped trellises ( which are appox' 7' tall x 4' wide) to give them
a nice open shape but they have grown taller & wider. By the way plenty of fruit.
Any thoughts folks.

Established formally trained trees should really have been tidied up late summer to encourage fruit next year. It's no real hardship, you can prune them any time you like but expect them throw a few extra branches out in the spring when it wakes up.

Many thanks to Yardman for his reply I will go out later & trim back the branches that are affected by the greenhouse door.

Don't know if it helps, but I've just pruned my apple arch at home.  It is a bit late, but the season is a late finisher this year.  The leaves are not even turning yet on my trees and I've only just finished picking the last of the fruit.
