Pruning a fruiting cherry
« on: August 14, 2016, 08:35 »
I want to tidy up a 10 year old fruiting cherry tree. I don't want to cut any big branches just the thing twiggy fingers. Imagine if you can please. Erhum . . . The main branches have thinner branches and on the end of these are thinner fingers. Well all the leaves are hanging from these fingers. It cropped really well last year ( we had 8ld of fruit) but not so well this year. It does look a bit untidy. Thanks.

According to the experts it's a bit late for pruning sweet cherry trees, should be done early to mid summer or you risk getting nasty diseases although it does sound like it will definitely benefit.  They say 'light' pruning can be done in spring so maybe have a go then at your really twiggy bits.  I've just started growing cherry trees so not much experience but love eating them!
