Overwintered Garlic going to seed
« on: June 10, 2016, 16:20 »
Last October I put one of my Isle of Wight Garlics in the raised bed and it got off to a good start, the other lot went in much later, probably early December and got off to a very slow start.  Now, however after the dry and hot weather we've had in the East Midlands (Retford area), the first lot are all putting up seedheads.  The others are looking fine with no sign of seedheads.  Should I lift the seedy ones and compost them?  Can I make any use of any of the plant?  Advice please.

The long stalky flower heads are called scapes and you can cut them and eat them. They taste of garlic and are delicious. The bulbs will carry on growing without the scape so you can leave them until the leaves are all yellowing.
