Hi all
not posted on here for a few days, not been staying away just been busy at the allotment and fighting a killer of a cold.

Anyways i went to take a look at the strawberry plants and noticed bits of them have started to grow what i think is roots?

can i cut them and re plant or is it best left alone

im wondering if they shouldnt be in hanging baskets

When grown in the ground they're left til they are well rooted,  or directed into small pots to make more roots, before they are cut away and planted elsewhere.
If you cut them away now, there might not be enough root for them to 'take'. Is there room in the basket to root them for a while?

thanks, yes there is plenty of room for them to root, i was also wondering if  i could leave them hanging over the casket will they produce fruit, i have alot of strawberry plants so not sure i need more, just curious really

They are the runners and are the method of vegetative reproduction for strawberries.

If you have new plants I would just cut them off as near to the parent plant as you can and discard them. They are using resources which at this time of year is better spent on fruit or building a good root system ready for fruiting next year.

Once your plants are about two years old, when fruiting has finished you can peg the plantlets down in a pot of compost to create more plants or straight into the ground. I would only allow one or two per plant so you do not prejudice your fruit production for the following year.

i shall remove them tomorrow, so far i had one big red strawberry which looked very nice until the slug had a munch on it
