Plantain weed
« on: April 06, 2016, 09:41 »
Just back recovered after a year out due to road collision and had to surrender my plot. I was reading about Plantain as I have a few of them around the garden just now and found that it was an edible weed with some healing properties and wondered if anyone has used it before taste, texture and if so how did you prepare it etc Thanks

http://www.ediblewildfood.com/broadleaf-plantain.aspx

I've never thought of it as an actual vegetable, more of something used to treat diahorrea or sooth bites when mashed up and put on them.

I have posted a link, as there is more than one plantain weed.. the other one has long, narrow darker green ridged leaves.

I know this doesn't answer your question really, easyonthe brain, but I hope it helps a little bit.

Good luck with getting your garden organised now ☺

I've read about the supposed benefits of plantain. All I know is that it has mighty persistent roots, so if it's growing somewhere you don't want it, don't leave it to get comfy!

Thank you Sunshineband great link and interesting read. I think I'll take Snoops advice and dig them up and put them int a pot or tough and try them out and I'll know where to go if I have the 'runs' lol. They look fairly similar to those in the picture so why not. I'm using some of the seeds from when I was in the Seed Circle just now to get going with Broad beans leading the charge. thanks again for replies and help.

I think I had the odd one or two last year and pulled them out, probably left some roots in and they are starting to come through again. I was looking for best way to kill them off when I came across the medicinal article on them. I think I'll keep one or two in pots and kill off the rest. Hopefully  :D

I kept a couple of the lesser plantain last year. They work wonders for nettle stings, better than dock in my opinion! Haven't tried eating it just yet, I would have thought it to be quite stringy!
