Rhubarb
« on: February 14, 2016, 09:15 »
Took my new plot on late last year. Strimmed it all down and I'm currently in the process of digging it all over. I found a rhubarb starting to grow yesterday but it's on the opposite end of the plot to the rest of my fruit. Is it safe to move it to a new home now or shall I leave it?

Rhubarb is pretty tough stuff.  I'd say you could move it now.  Just try and take as big of a rootball as you can and then leave it for a year to recover before you pick any  :)

If it's an old plant you may be mining to Australia - I found an old plant when clearing the newer plot which didn't do anything last year which went down about three feet at least and it turns out that the roots were hollow and rotting. It met the bonfire heap as it was obviously prehistorical.

It might do it good to move if it has been there for ages as you can then replant young vigorous sections from around the edges.

Just make sure the buds themselves are clear of the soil, and this time next year you can be looking forward to some tasty stalks!

Move it now while it's still cold and wet. If it's a big root then it's worth splitting it up before replanting the bits. Decide which bits you want to keep long term and the leave them alone this year to establish themselves. The other bits you can plant and harvest off this year and then throw them away at the end of the year.
