Seed Germnination with Hydrogen Peroxide
« on: January 30, 2016, 13:18 »
I have seen one or two references, usually American, to this on Youtube and here is an example:

HTLK55-Fl80
There has been the odd reference to it here but I wondered what the feeling was.  3% Hydrogen Peroxide is available here online.

I suppose it would prevent damping off now that all the fungicides we could previously use have been banned by the EU.

Good point, but the theory of using H2O2 is that oxygen becomes available to germinating seeds to aid breakdown of carbohydrates (energy)  It is a common practice with serious chilli growers to soak seeds in a solution of peroxide  ;)

Thank you both.  The suggestion is that small seed should be wrapped in a paper towel and then put in a 'baggie' and bigger seeds in a a baggie with damp vermiculite.  I think a baggie is what Americans call a sealable poythene bag.  I have had trouble germinating some seeds so I think I will give it a try.

We have been for our free cup of coffee at Dobbies today and bought 2Kg of Charlotte potatoes, 150 onion sets and shallots.

Ever wondered why the yolk in the egg of your scotch egg doesn't have a darkish ling around it?  A 24 hour soak in Hydrogen Peroxide H202 solution. I used to run the 'egg plant' at Bowyers of Trowbridge, we got through millions of eggs a week and quite a few barrels of H202.

Cheers,  Tony.
