No raspberries last year
« on: January 21, 2016, 15:56 »
The bed my Autumn Raspberries were in was very overgrown with couch grass.  I dug them up in 2014, healed them in a spare bed, worked on their bed and replanted them back at the beginning of summer of 2014,  I got virtually nothing in 2014 which I had expected.  Last year I cut them back down in February but only a few spindly canes about 2 ft high came up and I only got a handful of raspberries.  My OH planted them for me and does have a habit of planting things very deeply and using his size nine heal to secure trees and shrubs in, could this be the cause?  If it is is there anything I can do to sort it or should I just get some new canes?

I think you are suppose to plant in a new bed not replant into the same bed, but you might be right they are shallow rooted & might not have liked being deeply planted. How old are they?

They are only 4 - 5 years old, they are in a raised bed and I removed soil and refilled it with fresh soil and manure before I replanted them.

Yes - they only need to be planted about 3" deep so that may be the reason. They don't like to be water-logged either so maybe they were planted in too firmly as well. If the weather is ok, just dig them up and replant with a bit of bonemeal scuffled in their planting hole. Any remaining couch grass can be removed at the same time.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Perhaps they could also do with a good feed of Blood, Fish & Bone at the same time to give them a bit of a boost

My raspberries were awful this year - autumn raspberries - just the weather I think - so that may have been a factor too.
