A successful seed saving attempt
« on: January 09, 2016, 20:19 »
After I came out of hospital last summer my Kale plants had gone to seed and were full of seed heads, so I decided to pick some of them and try saving the seed with the intention of sowing it this year. I used the technique on the Real Seeds website, which involves heating some rice to dry it thoroughly, then put the rice in a small tupperware container, and then put the seeds in after the rice had cooled. The container was then put in the fridge and left there until last week. Last Sunday (3rd) I decided to do a trial sewing of the seed to test the viability, so sowed some of the seed in a small tray and put it on the windowsill. Towards the end of this week some of the seeds have germinated and I have several Kale seedlings now coming up, which I was very pleased with. I'll try sowing some more in spring and also give some away at the local seed swapping event in February. It is nice when you try something for the first time and it works.  :D

Yes there is something very special about growing plants from seeds you have saved yourself isn't there?

Time to plan ahead as to what you'll be saving from this year now!
