Numpty question alert...
« on: November 12, 2015, 13:24 »
Any suggestions for a flowering houseplant that will be happy in a cool (cold!) north-facing kitchen windowsill?

I have finally sorted out Allotment Corner and turned it back into a nice breakfast area that I'd like to prettify. I know nothing about non-edibles. Nothing. Will a cyclamen die there?

I wouldn't have thought so, I have one that is very badly treated on a northfacing window and it's been flowering happily for the past 6 years.  It does looks a little scruffy this year though  :(

Try African violets or Streptocarpus. My AV is on a sunless windowsill facing north and does better than I thought it would. The Streptocarpus faces west and only gets a little bit of sunlight in the summer evenings.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

What ever you get, don't leave it on the windowsill on cold nights, or with the blind/curtains closed.

Cyclamen like it cool, so unless it gets really cold, one of those will be fine.  Just remember to always water from the base and check them over regularly for dead flowers and leaves.  If these fester in the middle of the plant, they rot the buds in the centre of the corm.

If you want a really cheap alternative to practise on, little pot primroses can last inside for weeks in a cool spot and can then transplant to the garden or plot  :)
