potato blight
« on: September 10, 2015, 18:34 »
Fellow gardeners, my 10 rows of potatoes have been blight-free up to night and I have been gradually harvesting the rows and feeding them to the family. I have five or six rows left now but saw a lot of the leaves seem to be turning brown and some are shrivelling (see enclosed pictures). Do you think I should do the usual trick of cutting of all the surface greenery and then leave the potatoes in the ground for three weeks before harvesting so as to avoid them becoming infected?

I would, but the advice is to wait for 2 weeks before lifting.

Pictures are quite hard to see but doesn't look like blight, looks like they've reached that stage where they just start to die back on their own. In either case just cut the stems down to the ground and leave a few weeks for the skins to set if you plan on storing them.

Whether or not it is blight you may as well cut off the tops as you will not get much more growth of tubers now.
