Fruit tree positioning
« on: August 01, 2015, 08:46 »
I'm thinking of adding espalier fruit trees to my plot.

As you look down my plot I have a central path.  The left boundary adjoins another plot.  The right boundary adjoins a 4ft wide path.  My options are:

Along left boundary
Along right boundary
Either side of path

What thinks you?

What type of fruit trees are you thinking of?
What are the soil/ground conditions like in each of those areas?
What do you have around each of those areas? (rotating beds, permanent plants, fruit bushes etc.)
What is the orientation of each?

In all fairness, if it was me personally, I would plant in all of them   :)

You can never have too much fruit  :)

I had plans to do the same and then realised it was really going to impede my movement and access to my beds and around my plot, so 3 apples along the wall on one side of my plot and the others have kinda found homes where they won't be a nuisance.

Netted one cherry tree and got fruit, didn't the other and the birds stripped it completely. I suspect kids pulled off my first two plums.

Soils good all over. I only have two large beds, one either side of the parh as smaller raised beds seemed like a bit of a waste in only half a plot

I'm a little worried about roots tbh taking up too much workable ground. So maybe the outer boundaries?

Plant the trees in 30l buckets and it will restrict the roots and help keep them small
