Growers pellets and laying hens
« on: July 14, 2015, 22:13 »
The growers pellets my feed merchant has,has anticoccodis in it. What problems might occur if laying hens eat it and is egg withdrawl required?
Thank you

It won't harm the hens but is transferred into the eggs and has not been tested for human consumption so it's not known if it is harmful. From what I remember there used to be a warning on the bag that the medicated feed has to be withdrawn so many weeks before culling if the bird is to be consumed. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

I think I will have to move all the chicks to my house as I would prefer the medicated for them all. BIL has 3 of my chicks at mo, but never bothers with growers,I don't want them on layers.

Layer can cause liver problems if fed too early. Allan and Page do unmedicated growers pellets. I've had to buy it a couple of weeks ago for my ducklings, but it is very expensive - nearly £10 a bag.

Thanks for that.BIL,who is raising 3 chicks for me, doesn't bother with growers and I do.I also only swap at 16 weeks for layers. So might move them to me. I have 3 girls as I will sell excess hens I prefer them to be on the medicated.

I plan on selling the hens I do not need,so prefer coccodis pellets. BIL tends to allow his chicks to mix at an early age with his flock. I have said the growers are needed for another 10 weeks, but might move them to mine.
