watering onions
« on: June 28, 2015, 15:15 »
It has been very hot down here for the past two weeks and my onions are just starting to form decent sized bulbs should I be giving them a bit of water to make sure they achieve their proper size?

I would you are going to be roasting this week according to BBC Weather ....40 deg C coming your way.
Suggest you water them whilst you can still do so without sunstroke 😊😊😊

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Yes HH the weather has been very hot here for a couple of weeks now but next week is going to be a frazzler! Its 34 today at our house in the shade so later this evening I am going to get the hose out and water the things that need most for the rest I will use what I have in the water butts as the toms don't like over head watering although from a tap may well be OK as it is free from bacteria but then you have the same amount of chlorine to think about. This is just a great example of what can happen down here everybody thinks it is easy to grow things down here, well it is true some plants thrive but you try telling that to a bunch of frazzled cabbages :) . To be fair the oinions I think prefer it dry but it has been a couple of weeks since we had any rain so I will water them as they are beginning to really start to bulb now. The French beans are just starting now so they need a good dose too.

We have had dry weather now for some weeks, so I have been giving my onions a really good soak once a week, and they are bulbing up well.

They do need water to fatten up that bulb  :nowink:
