Can squash be grown in a 100L bin?
« on: June 05, 2015, 10:30 »
Sadly I had to give up my plot recently due to distance and lack of a car. However I had planted my potimarron seeds and have 2 little plants growing and I really want to see them through. Only having a small garden I've been considering putting 1 or 2 of the plants into a big bin that's about 100L, and filling it with a mix of MPC and rotted manure.

Has anyone done this before and is it successful? The potimarron is about the same size as uchiki kuri squash.

Bad luck, giving up the plot - life happens  :(

Growing squash works in a compost bin, so will work in your bin  :D Make sure you water enough though.

Go for it!

Watering will be the only issue. Once the plants get big they really suck the soil dry.

UPVC waste pipe with holes drilled along it pushed into the bin with the end at a height that will be above the growth then use that to get the water below the foliage and the roots into the soil.

Great suggestion! Thank you :)

Depends what the edges of the bin are like, but you might want to put insulation pipe/padding around the top. I lost a plant last year to the wind rubbing the stem across the edge till it snapped.

Thanks Surbie, that's a good point; I'll have a peek at the bin when I next pop outside.

One last question - would I be able to grow 2 squashes in a 100L bin or is that pushing it?!

I would only grow one in a bin.  I grew some a crookneck squash in an old plastic dustbin and it was fine. It will get heavy when laden with fruit (you hope!  :D) so it could tip over if it gets dry between waterings

The manure will slump as it rots down and your squash could disappear out of sight, so some compost/and or soil would help with that. You could then top dress with extra muck as the plant descends  :)

Good luck  :)
