Compost bin/laurel
« on: June 03, 2015, 12:28 »
Hi, next door has a greenhouse right on the (their) boundary. I know they're not looking to put fencing up any time soon. I have young children and obviously glass is dangerous so I'm going to put my 2 compost bins in front of it so kids can't go near,( it doesn't block the light as greenhouse is raised)
However they have a monster (& overhanging) laurel right next to their greenhouse and the roots will be under the compost bins. I don't want to feed the thing, will black plastic with small holes suffice for worms & drainage and to not feed the tree? Or other ideas I could do but need to be temporary for when they (hopefully) do the fence.
Relations are good btw, they moved in soon after we did which wasn't that long ago

Black plastic with holes in would be fine for worms and drainage  :)

There will be a bit of nutrient rich liquid seeping into the soil, so the laurel will benefit slightly.  It may also try and send roots up into the heap.  You could try laying paving slabs just straight onto the soil in the base of your bins.  The worms will find their way in, but the slabs will keep all but the finest feeding roots of the laurel at bay.  These will be easy to hoike out when you turn the bin contents  :)
