Stripped broccoli leaves
« on: May 23, 2015, 19:32 »
Hi all
On allotment today and noticed a few broccoli leaves are stripped down to virtual skeletons! Only put the seedlings in yesterday!
Was on allotment all day and as I was leaving, I noticed that several more leaves on other plants are also seriously chomped. No birds were around at all and on inspection - I could see no caterpillars.
Help!
Carpe Diem

It will be pigeons !

They will be doing it while you're not around.

Netting will keep them off.

If you don't net it - you don't get it!

The pigeons will get it instead  ::)

Or could be slugs/snails. If they look as though bits have been cut off it is pigeons. Slugs/snails have rasping mouthparts and the leaves have holes in them, also slime trails.

It's pigeons!

Without a photo or detailed description how do you know? Probably, yes, but not for sure.

I'd lay a shilling on it being pigeons.

Slugs and snails will eat some of the leaf ribs too; pigeons never do.  So, net them and put a few "Growing Success, Advanced Slug Pellets"  around for good measure.
