Sweetcorn and sweet potatoes
« on: May 04, 2015, 23:37 »
Can they successfully grow in the same bed? I have a 4x8 ft bed that is awaiting my sweet potato slips and was wondering if corn could do ok amongst the vining sweet potatoes. Anyone have any experience or guestimations on the matter? Btw growing season is long and hot enough for both crops, so that part shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks in advance.

I hope so, my sweet potatoes will have to go down that end if they ever get going.

I dug a new bed just for sweet potatoes this year and am waiting for the slips to arrive. I've never grown corn of any kind but figured what the heck, might as well give it a try. Just placed an order for sweet corn and popcorn...leaning towards growing the popcorn as it will keep my interest into the fall as it dries. Can't hurt to try.

Pure guesswork, because it's a struggle to grow sweet potatoes well outdoors in the UK even on their own - I suspect there would be competition for nutrients and water, but above all, how would you leave sufficient space underground for the tubers to develop properly?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

other than the nutrient availability it may also be hard to get to the corn to check for ripeness and harvest with sweet potato's in amongst them, unless in your area the sweet potato's are ready earlier than the corn.

My growing season is hot and long enough to do both and the bed they'll be sharing is a raised one, so no issues with accessibility. Also the bed is brand new and chock full of compost and well rotted manure, all sitting on top of some nutrient rich clay soil.
