Too late for Toms?
« on: April 20, 2015, 10:04 »
I had to go away on business at short notice last week.  Left my daughter in charge, she forgot about the greenhouse and everything in it fried and a slug/snail had a good chomping session.  I resowed toms, cucks and peppers on Friday.  Just wondering am I too late?  They are destined for an unheated Poly Tunnel.  I noticed the local garden centre had some nice plants on sale over the weekend (not the varieties I had sown), should I get some of these just in case?

I would have said just the right timing for a unheated poly tunnel. Mine only got done Saturday.

Hope not - only sowed mine yesterday (I've got window sill space to start them off but not for potting on, so don't like to take any chances with 'only' an unheated greenhouse and a cold frame to move them into.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Deffo not too late for toms - haven't even started my greenhouse cukes yet  ::) so no need to panic  :nowink:

Might be a good idea to get some plug peppers though, as they generally take longer than the other stuff. Sown now they may be late fruiting.

Phew! Was a in a bit of a panic as I've only just sown my tomato seeds. Feel happier reading those replies lol....have just moved house so everything rather chaotic at the moment, am late with most seed sowing and have only just put my potatoes in too. Peppers I did in late Feb thankfully, plants are about 4 inches high now.

Good to hear it's not too late for tomatoes, my seeds haven't been sown that long!

Peppers got started off earlier but are still very small!

Mine have only just germinated for outside growing.  Too soon and they get so leggy before they can go out to the mini greenhouse ....  Too late and the darn things dont ripen!  One day there will be a polytunnel  ::) ;)

last year i sowed half my tomatoes when they could germinate in the tunnel, think about mid may. i got fed up of the hassle of starting them off early (too much in, out for me)

they only ended up 2 or 3 weeks later than the ones i started over 2 months earlier. a lot healthier plants and by the end of the season had the same if not more crop.

i also done peppers late last year but i had to wait a long time for them to crop.

this year i've done all my peppers early and 2 toms and 1 cuc (just to get an early taster), although i think these have suffered from too much direct sun/ high temperature too soon one day in the tunnel (some of the leaves look a bit burnt). this is what i mean too much hassle, especially if you only have limited time slots to check them due to working.

It's certainly not too late for sowing toms, and I've not even started sowing cucumbers yet. Peppers, though need a long growing season, and it is late for them.
