Something is eating the foliage of patches of my onion bed. Any ideas please?  I've even tried smelling the cat!

Are they bitten right off or have leaves got holes in them?

Bitten right off and I can't see any left lying about. The tops were quite substantial too, about 15 inches high, They are now about 3 inches high...

pigeons possible? can you see if the foliage has a pecked edge?

i've put mine in today and have netted them in case. pigeons seem to have found the veggy patch now.

slugs may be your problem i lost all my onions to them 1 year

Rabbits will sometimes eat them. The fact that they are grazed in patches makes this possible. Do you have rabbits on your plot. Look for droppings and /or shallow scratchings in the soil

Salmo - that's a good idea. Have a look to see if you can find droppings of any sort to help you identify the culprit.

I netted them and they are ok now, so I'm guessing it was the pigeons. Thanks for the help.

same happened to my shallots and onions last year, wasnt sure if it was a deer. They grew back fine I just gave them a water and a sprinkle of chicken pellets.
