Lettuce trio
« on: April 22, 2015, 13:41 »
Hi

If I wanted to grow three types of lettuce together do I just sow the three seeds in the same cell or sow separate and then plant together?

I was hoping to grow them like you can buy them in the supermarkets.

I have two looseleaf and a butterhead

Many thanks

Marie

If you are planning to cut them when they're very small, like the small trays of growing lettuce you can buy in Lidl

then I would put a pinch of seed of each variety in a bowl mix them up, the use the mix to sow a module tray(12 holes to a seed tray), a few seeds per module hole.
You'll get a mix that way. You can grow them in the modules, and eat them as small lettuce, or plant them in the ground for bigger lettuces.

If you grow in the modules they do need quite a lot of watering if it warms up.

I don't think?? you'll be able to grow three different ones "in one clump" as I would expect them to mature at slightly different times, so I think?? :) you'll have to grow them separately and harvest "three the same size".

I sow my Lettuce in a little seed tray, and then prick-out to a pot (and then plant out). It takes about 14 days from sowing to pricking out, and I then immediately sow some more (in the same tray / compost). That way I have a steady succession all summer long.  I only sow enough seed for 12 plants each time (I grow three different varieties) - which is about what we eat in a fortnight.

Oh well

As a family of 6 I use one good sized lettuce for each meal so thought if I could pick one but which included a bit of variety I would use it all and have no waste.

Im with MoS. A lot of my cut and come again lettuce mature at the same the time so would be worth doing what she advises. Theres so many to choose from it wouldnt be that difficult to select a few to suit you.

Hearting lettuce do take a little longer, but you could space them separately between the cut and come again clumps? Best of both worlds.
