How to secure netting on frame for easy access?
« on: April 18, 2015, 17:59 »
Hi folks, hubby has built a wooden frame to cover our fruit bushes and we have got some decent netting to go over it.  My question is how can we secure the netting on the vertical bits of the frame so I can easily roll it up of lift it to pick the fruit inside.  The frame  is made from wood that's about 2 inches square.  The top bit of netting will be secured permanently with cable ties.  Am wondering if some kind of hooks would work or long twist tie things..any ideas welcome.  Cheers!

What kind of netting is it? I have black plastic bird netting that gets caught on anything and everything, including itself. I've found that rolling it onto a bamboo pole helps to keep it sorted.

It's black 20mm bird netting.  The bamboo is a good idea but still need to fix it to the vertical batons I think or it will be too saggy or contract leaving gaps down the sides.  Maybe we need more overlap...

I've got a row of galvanised roofing nails along the edge of the raised bed frame and I just hook the net onto those.  Would something like that work? It has to be stretched on otherwise it just falls off the nail.

Perfik solution  :nowink:

We are also building a new fruit cage this year and intend to have a door but want to be able to take the netting off the front to allow birds access to eat bugs etc after the fruit picking is finished. I like the idea of the galvanised nails as they have nice big heads, Annen  :D :D

Thanks for the suggestions folks, galvanised nails sounds like a good cheap solution.  I did wonder about Velcro myself but don't fancy the idea of stitching it on.  Daren't suggest a door, it's taken OH months of planning and weeks to get it built!  I did give him 6 months warning knowing how long these things seem to take!

If you can arrange the netting in such a way that you can create an opening flap, I find plastic sprung clothes pegs ideal for closing it (either netting to netting, or to canes, although obviously they're not big enough to clip to battens without adding a few screws or nails in strategic places first.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I also use clothes pegs and the sides and tops as they clip nicely to canes, but Im still putting wood at the bottom to anchor things down.  When I get 5 minutes the intention was to pass some washing line through some vine eyes on the raised beds so the bottoms could then be pegged to that.

You can get stick on Velcro but I don't know if it'd be suitable
