Never had a great deal of success with onions, I think mine have manage only about the same as described, if they and I were lucky.

Decided this year that a few I had would be planted and then then I would not bother any more. So I have about3/4 of a row of them all looking pretty weedy. I suspect that I am spending more on onion sets and manure/feed/compost then I would on just buying from whatever supermarket I happened to be nearest to.

Not sure what knack is to growing them but it seems I am not party to it.

I don't like growing onions or garlic in cells, I have found the mpc has different water retention levels to my soil and stays wetter than the surroundxing soil causing the bottom of the bulbs to go mouldy and the roots don't like to spread.

It could have been dodgy sets, last year was quite dry, if this years the same, I would want to feed monthy, water weekly and mulch with compost if I have any spare.
