This year I fancy growing fennel, I have not grown it before. Has anyone any tips please, when, where, how to plant and how to care for it.

I see you have had a lot of good advice on here already , so would just like to add that I grew it for first time last year and would not be without it now, and my wife chopped, blanched,  and then bagged  and froze it. It is real handy to add to stir-fries and among your roasted vegetables

Just a word of warning - apparently fennel releases some root-inhibiting substance into the soil, so be careful what you grow near it. Last time I tried it (before I knew this) all the nearby carrots were seriously stunted.

Do you know what is ok to grow next to fennel? I am a bit wary of it now.
