New to the Poultry raising, Need Help!
« on: March 14, 2015, 21:34 »
On Thursday. our power went out all night until the next morning at 8. That Friday night, we put two heat lamps instead of one, because of it was still raining and a bit chilly. This morning I went to feed them, and all but one of  the goslings ( we have 8 mallards and four geese) ran straight as per normal to the feed and water. That particular one was sitting down, it's head nodding. I thought, as they are just six days old today, it just needed guidance, but when I picked it up it was totally limp, would not move it's wings, legs, like it had broken its back.. We brought it into the house and got some water into it. We didn't think it was going to make it, but eventually it started to revive. it is walking, drinking, and eating, but still weak. I've considered staggers on the cause of the heat, coccidios on the inability to stand and that it affects young goslings, or botulism because she was so limp and paralysis... but I'm unsure... does anyone have advice or suggestions to what it may be?

Thanks. We put "Big Bill"(the one who was sick-he's the largest male, with a larger bill)  back with his siblings late last night when he finally began to walk. When I went to feed him this morning he seemed to be fine, he was eating normally and everything. Seeing how he's better, I think it was simply staggers-the two heat lamps were just too much. We think what happened was that the gosling fell asleep directly under one (the others were huddled together between the two lamps) and when he woke up he was dehydrated. We'll keep an eye on him, but for now I think he'll be fine.
