Horse muck worries..
« on: October 12, 2015, 22:38 »
Hi folks, I have acquired 2 lots of horse muck from 2 different sources and now I'm confused about what to do with it.  One lot is pure muck collected where it dropped in the field.  Other lot has lots of shavings in it, both quite fresh.  I know not to use it near plants fresh and was going to spread it on some of the empty beds then I read on an old post on this site about something called aminopyrolid that can actually stop stuff growing which sounds pretty scary.  Is that stuff still around?  Then there's the shavings which might cancel any benefit..advice please?!

The aminopyrolid problems seem to have died down, but John has written quite a few articles about it on the main site.  If you do a search on there you will find them, but this is one about testing for it in manure, which might help put your mind at rest.

The stuff you have is fresh, so it will rot down faster if you pile it in a heap.  This will certanly help with the shavings :)

Thanks Newshoot, have read the article, very helpful.  Will pile it all up and test next year, would be devastated if it ruined my crops. Think I'll stick with compost for now and pile that on the beds as have loads of the stuff. Cheers!
