Seaweed Compost help
« on: February 16, 2015, 19:50 »
Hi All

Nearly killed myself last weekend carrying 60 bags of organic green compost uphill to my new plot and do not want a repeat next year.
I hoped to over the coming months fill say 2 bags a week and carry them up to my allotment , will seaweed  store ok in  bags with the tops tied?
my thoughts are in I can get say 60 ish bags for next year together with any compost I make it should suffice
I don't really want to make open compost bins as I don't want to take up loads of space and need to tie the tops as our plot backs onto somebodys garden and don't want complaints

You could spread it on the plot to save storing it

Hi

Thanks for the reply

was concerned that I couldn't spread it as the plot will be fully planted up until late autumn and partly  planted through the winter

If it were me I would use it as a mulch in between bigger plants and gently hoe it in through the season.

same as bravemurphy as above, i dont think it would keep anyway, and if it were in plastic bags then it would sweat and probably stink to high hell after a few months.

Rotting seaweed does attract rather a lot of flies, which would be quite unpleasant.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

From experience. Seaweed isn't pleasant if you forgot about a bag and don't empty it till a few weekends later! I thought Comfrey was bad....

I Usually spread seaweed fresh either when a bed is empty or use it as mulch between plants. Also I think it's a bit of a slug deterrent which is good.

Guy on our allotment site reckons he gets 50% more than the plot next door  by using seaweed in his  potato trench bottoms whereas next door uses manure

They famously use seaweed dragged up from the beach to grow Jersey Royals; dragged by machines though :D
