I add them and I have tons of worms. Clumps of them that fall at my feet when I open the lid  :D

I really like making kitchen compost as it matures much quicker and there's no weeds in it.

I'd invest in a compost bin Lotus. They're the business  :)  I have a pallet bin but it composts its contents much more slowly. I chuck the thuggish stuff in that but I do water it if it looks dry and I turn the contents occasionally, and I keep it covered

Thanks compostqueen

I have tried to make compost in the past and before that I had a wormery but there is only two of in the house and the  waste that went in the bins where citrus peel and banana skins plus grass cuttings, we don't have a lot of waste. I cannot put leaves in as my garden is surrounded with laurel leaves and they do not rot down well.

Unless you have got any ideas.

my dad makes lovely compost just by putting grass cuttings and leaves (i think half and half) into compost bags turned inside out and the opening tied up. then leaves it to do it's thing, every now and again he turns the bags over and gives a bit of a shake (with the bag still tied).

try asking on gumtree or freecycle if anybody wants their leaves collected and removed, i have a supplier of leaves and manure from this.

you should have the veg trimmings and finished plants that can all be composted, you can add cardboard to the veg waste to bulk it up and give you a mix of brown to the mix

I looked into getting a bin, but the cost is outrageous, especially considering that we'd likely need more than one. The contraption I use now is a big piece of plastic with holes in it. I kept it covered over the summer and it was always interesting to see what critters were at work underneath the tarp. Turning it is a hassle as I have to empty the contents into a wading pool to make enough room to mix it up. One of these days I'll learn how to do it right 😝

I have a big plastic, sectional one with big holes in it, which is really rubbish but it was donated by my neighbour.  Bins have come on since this model which i think hails from them1970s.  I keep it covered with a builders rubble sack

you can poke holes in the compost and wiggle the contents about, dampening them if needs be.  You don't have to take the lot out

Have just come across this post. We too have some of these in our garden and I was going to compost them after 'shredding ' with the lawn mower. I discovered that this would release a VERY harmful gas and so opted to leave well alone. Everything that is compatible for the compost bin goes in so was very reluctant to have to effectively give it away!!
