I find a product called Copperslip very good when replacing head studs/bolts as it has a very high melting point and stays put, what ever lubricant you use try not to get any in the bottom of the threaded holes as this can cause a hydraulic lock and interfere with the torqueing down of the head.

Got it drilled out and threaded properly but the hole is not quite square to the block ( dodgy drilling ) so tightening this bolt interferes with the fit of the others, so it's missing. The head now has 7 bolts instead of 8 on a new head gasket .Not got it to fire up yet so don't know whether it's a goer or not. There's a wire from behind the flywheel which goes to a spring clip under the fuel tank. What's it for and should it have ground on it when it's not connected to the clip ? ( it does ).

its probably the wire that shorts the ignition coil to cut the engine.

That's what I thought but there's still a ground connection on it when the end is disconnected from under the fuel tank.

You should not really grease a head bolt as this can give a false torque reading and it can vibrate loose.
If the cylinder gasket does have a leak this may be cured with gold hermatite or hylamar. (same stuff just a different maker)
The wire is the engine cut out. It will have a ground on it if the cut out is activated. (a safety handle on a lawn mower pulled in when operating) this connects to a spade clip on the coil.
May the fork be with you
