The areas you put things in fairly early say potatos in march will be fine with a thin layer of muck and no digging just bulb planter your spuds in.

Areas where you'll have crops going in later say squashes courgettes and sweetcorn will benifit from covering the soil to keep the weeds at bay so you don't have to dig

Where you have finer crops then these areas will benifits form a light dig over, covering or no covering makes little difference when you dig you'll expose seeds that will then germinate.
