Behaviour change during moult?
« on: December 03, 2014, 19:20 »
My three are at various stages of moulting, which doesn't worry me but the change in their attitude to me does!  They either ignore me or run away from me, whereas before they would follow me around.  I realise that they see me largely as the person that feeds them and so their affection is somewhat due to that, but even the friendliest one  hides when I appear.  Is this normal, or is our love affair with each other over?

Hens can feel vulnerable when they mount and the pecking order can also change. As they refeather they will probably go back to being more friendly.

I have 2 moulting

they usually perch but at the moment they are snuggled with the old ladies in the nest boxes at night , both have watery poops to so they both are acting like old ladies at the mo

they even aren't so keen on food which is surprising considering all that energy is needed to grow new feathers

We've got a 'rules the roost' problem.  Two like to snuggle up but one will attack and drive them to the end of the perch.  I thought it was a moulting thing but it seems not.

Seriously thinking of dividing the top perch into two so the friendly ones can get some peck free space.

One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Mine are off their food too as well as being very aloof.  They are very quiet too.  Mind you, I guess that I wouldn't be partying in their condition either!

Some high protein food can help during the moult eg kitten food - not chicken though
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I think that may change if the weather gets colder, the  bully will realise that a warm hen each side is a bonus!

Ruling the roost is what hens do, no good trying to stop it as she will only enforce her position as top hen at another time.

I had an infra red camera in the coop and could see the very hard pecks sometimes delivered but no lasting harm was ever done. :)

Its me I'm too soft!  I watch them going to bed and the gentle ones not daring to get onto the perch.  Just checked them and they have taken themselves to their seperate zones.  I'll change things around again soon to see how it goes.
