Plagued by caterpillers!!
« on: November 22, 2014, 13:32 »
At the beginning of the summer I posted to ask where were all the Cabbage Whites. I wish I had never asked!
Since mid summer to Autumn they came in their droves.

This is my first year growing PSB and they have grown like trees. I kept them covered until October, but thought I would be safe from the Cabbage Whites and caterpillars by then. How wrong I was! It's late November and I am still picking off caterpillars in the dozens every day and have had what seems like hundreds in the last two weeks. What the caterpillars have not had, the pigeons have feasted on, so it has been a disaster on the PSB front. Think I'm just going to pull them up and accept that I won't be getting any. :(

The very mild weather has meant that the pesky white butterflies carries on laying eggs much longer than usual, and their caterpillars usually overwinter too!!

You can always try soaking the spears in salty water as that will shift any lingering wildlife m1ckz

It's a similar story over here, I hadn't seen any caterpillars all summer and I am totally uncovered. But last week I had to pick my first cauli as it was covered. In a different life I would have thrown it away but I cut off the damage and it was delicious.

Yes but, not the pigeons! They have taken all the top growth and shoots. Must be the best fed pigeons around here I think. >:(
