Red mites are here! Should I paint?
« on: November 03, 2014, 19:26 »
Poor Mabel is getting her blood sucked by these little things.  We just worked out last night what's going on.  I've sprayed the coop with Poultry Shield.  Diatom, more Shield and tonic ordered so I will be able to do a full clean out and treatment when it arrives.

My question is.......as they hide in tiny cracks/joins in the wood, doesn't it make sense to paint the coop (particularly the inside) with a 'solid' paint?

I've been searching and see different opinions on paint/wood treatment and the need for animal safe products etc.  The regular interior wood paint in my garage doesn't say anything about animal safety but it must be safe for my kids to be in contact with, so shouldn't it be ok for the birds, once it's fully dried.......?!  Is this crazy logic?!

children aren't cooped up in a tiny room for 12 hours at a time. Chickens will also peck at the paint if it starts peeling so unless it says bat safe then I wouldn't use it.
Your best bet is to keep repeating the poultry shield treatment and then use it once a month. If you put poultry shield slurry in the search box on here it should find Hillfooters recipe which is supposed to work brilliantly.
Staffies are softer than you think.

It does work.  Although the coop usually ends up looking like something out of Great Expectations!
