Getting rid of Ivy
« on: August 30, 2014, 14:00 »
We had a thread on this a couple of years ago but I can't find it. Anyway, as an alternative to actually digging the stuff out (quite difficult as it's intertwined in the roots of a hedge and beneath a fence), would painting some of the leaves with neat glyphosate work?

This old thread was referred to a couple of years ago, but may be the info you were looking for...

I don't think glyphosate works very well on shiny evergreen leaves  :(

I'd be minded to chop it off near / at ground level and use a stump / brushwood glyphosate product on it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Id be of the same mind, trace the stem back to the beginning and put the lot in a jar of something nasty so the ivy takes it up.  ;)

Glyphosate is an effective herbicide for eliminating ivy.

Howe much hedge will you have left if you do remove the ivy? That can be a serious consideration.

Not much, Christine but I'd be happy to start again with the hedge as it's more of a decorative one rather than a boundary marker
