Potatoes - scaly manky skin!
« on: August 23, 2014, 14:23 »
Hello

I've been fortunate and had fantastic potato crop, but this year for some reason the plants wilted and died a couple of weeks ago. I've just dug them up and the spuds look like this. It doesn't look like the pictures of blight I've seen when I did a google. Is this insect infestation? Will they keep, or do I need to use them quickly? Or is it just blooming blight...

Any advice appreciated!

Chris

What you have there is potato scab:

Some advice to be found at link above.

Hi boogaloo, yes it is scab, we always have some on our Maris Piper, but this year it has been awful.

But you can still use the spuds as its only on the surface, which if you want you can scrape it off.

I always scrape the scab of the worst spuds. they soon dry and callous over.

It doesn't affect the eating quality of the spuds in any way.

You will have to check on a regular basis that they are keeping ok, and use first any that may not keep so well.
