I planted a Victoria plum tree 31 years ago. After fruiting profusely most of its life with several stone of fruit each year, the last two years have been disappointing despite good growing weather. The tree blossomed OK but what little fruit that set fell off last month. Time to replace it?

Can I ask, I have got a 18 month old Victoria Plum tree and this year it has produced about 6 single Plums but apart from that it looks healthy.

How long before it gives a good crop?

Well I planted another Victoria very early in 2012 and it's fruiting well this year so the answer to your question is about 2 - 3 years

Having Googled it, I find that Prunus trees last for 15-20 year with exceptions of 30 yrs. So Alan it seems that your tree has lasted very well.

I too planted a Victoria last year and this year it has cropped extremely well. Branches in danger of breaking, with supports everywhere. Needs a proper support frame for next year.

My plum tree is young but last year it yielded not one single plum so I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to replace your tree. Maybe it's having a rest and you will get a bumper crop next year

When my elderly mother moved to her present house she inherited a gnarled old Victoria plum tree in the garden. It was old then and is still giving bumper crops twenty-six years later!!

Those on dwarfing rootstocks will start fruiting sooner but will have a shorter productive life than a full-size tree.

Do you know what rootstock your tree is on fatbelly?  A dwarfing one will make a smaller tree and obviously a smaller harvest, but plums are pretty generous with their fruit.

My neighbour has a self seeded tree in her front garden.  She thinks it came from a plum stone chucked over the garden fence years before.  It was heavily pruned last year, so there is limited fruit this year.  Usually we help her pick and there are bucket loads of fruit

I've no idea what rootstock mine has, it grows to about 12 ft, but last time I bothered to weigh the fruit it totalled over 50lb

I have just cut down a couple of plum trees on my plot, they are a right pain the plums rot and fall then before you know it the rotten plum seeds start rooting, I have got loads of roots about 2 foot high now I have to dig out.

There are other plot holders who have plum trees and lots of their plums have worms inside, put my off eating them lol

.  My 5year old plum tree has branches hanging on the ground. Any I pick I split open down the crease and check them for grubs. There is usually only one grub inside and even if you can't see it there will be little specks of droppings. Only a few have them its still worth using them. Last year I h could count them on one hand this year I have hundreds.
